I think it’s time to log off the internet for a while.

Look, let's just get this out of the way now — if you scroll any further down and DON'T want to read about dozens of men trying to turn coconuts into fleshlights, just get out of here right now. OK?

Anyway, around eight years back I lived in Northern Mozambique, a coastal southern African country with quite a warm climate. My mother at the time was going through a 'health nut' phase and only buying foods she deemed healthy enough. One of these was coconuts. She would buy several coconuts a week to use in food from the local market.

What If Everything In "Game Of Thrones" Is Actually All Bran's Fault?

There's an ancient prophecy central to both the Game of Thrones TV show and the Song of Ice and Fire books that describes a last battle of good versus evil.

There's an ancient prophecy central to both the Game of Thrones TV show and the Song of Ice and Fire books that describes a last battle of good versus evil.

The prophecy stems from a battle that took place about 8,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during a previous White Walker invasion.

People in Westeros describe a "Last Hero" who will emerge in a final showdown, while people in Essos believe an ancient warrior named Azor Ahai, who once defeated the White Walkers, will return for a last battle. They call their version "The Prince Who Was Promised."

Both stories agree that White Walkers will return and attempt to usher in a long night, and a great warrior will rise up and save the day.

awoiaf.westeros.org

There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him.

On one side is the Lord of Light — the heart of fire, the god of flame and shadow. Against him stands the Great Other, whose name may not be spoken: the lord of darkness, the soul of ice, the god of night and terror. According to prophecy, our champion will be reborn to wake dragons from stone and reforge the great sword Lightbringer that defeated the darkness those thousands of years ago. If the old tales are true, a terrible weapon forged with the lifeblood of a loving wife's heart. Part of me thinks man was well rid of it, but great power requires great sacrifice. That much, at least, the Lord of Light is clear on.

• A prince named Azor Ahai appeared at a moment of great darkness.
• He had a flaming sword called Lightbringer.
• The sword was forged in a loving wife’s blood.
• Azor Ahai then used that sword to defeat the "Great Other."
• Then a prophecy called "The Prince Who Was Promised" was written in high Valyrian.
• It says that Azor Ahai would one day return.
• He would be born from the line of House Targaryen.
• And he would once again wield Lightbringer to conquer the darkness.

Trolls Are Trying To Hijack The German Election By Copying Trump Supporters

Right-wing supporters are trying to learn from similar campaigns in France and the Netherlands.

German users on 4chan are currently making plans to start a “meme war” that would influence the outcome of the upcoming German election.

German users on 4chan are currently making plans to start a “meme war” that would influence the outcome of the upcoming German election.

They hope to organize an online campaign that would swing the election this month in favor of the country's right-wing populist party, Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

The discussion about German election memes has been taking place across several posts on 4chan’s “Politically Incorrect” message board. Their goal is to suppress votes for competing parties and demoralize left-wing activists. They plan to launch their "meme war" three weeks before the September 24 election.

So far, though, the 4chan users don’t seem to have much prepared. They've created an archive of about 270 memes that users can spread in support of the AfD, a list of political events the group wants to influence, and YouTube videos about far-right German politics that users can share.

The pro-AfD posters are drawing inspiration from right-wing campaigns abroad. They talk about learning from previous meme wars, such as in France when far-right trolls tried and ultimately failed to spread memes and disinformation in an attempt to influence the outcome.

AfD has been sliding in the polls and is currently tied for fifth place with the Green party.

Unlike trolls during the French election, German 4chan users don't appear to be doing much outreach to American Trump supporters. Save for a few posts, the 4chan thread is mostly in German.

A German YouTuber Tried To Make His Far-Right Hashtag Go Viral And It Was A Huge Flop

Last week, far-right German YouTuber Nikolai Alexander, who makes videos under the name Reconquista Germanica, invited his 33,000 subscribers to a newly launched Discord server.

BuzzFeed News entered the room under a pseudonym on Sunday night as members of the chatroom attempted to flood Twitter with far-right memes and posts against Martin Schulz’s Social Democratic Party and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, who were debating on TV at the time.

This strategy of moving users from 4chan to YouTube to more private online spaces like Discord isn't new. French trolls organized several aggressive disruption campaigns on Discord servers in the lead-up to their election. And Discord servers played a key role in the organization of the protests in Charlottesville last month.

Alexander hoped to use Discord in a similar way to drum up last-minute support for Germany's right-wing populist party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). AfD has been sliding in the polls and is currently tied for fifth place with the Green party.

Alexander says in his 17-minute video that he wants all his supporters to join the Reconquista Germanica Discord server because it makes it easier to coordinate online attacks.

"The first campaign starts on Sept. 1 and ends on Sept. 24 with the Bundestag election," Alexander says in the video. "The aim of the first campaign is to hoist the AfD as much as possible into the Bundestag. Today we will also start the meme war in the Bundestag against the race of mutts." After the Bundestag election, he says he wants to try to use the Discord room "to go after failed conservatives like [Markus] Pretzell and other hypocrites and strengthen the Höcke wing."

France Has Spent Millions Of Dollars Renting Planes To Deport Migrants

PARIS — The French government has spent nearly 34 million euros since 2006 on leasing private planes to move and deport migrants, a BuzzFeed News investigation has found.

While a number of reports over the years have indicated that the French Interior Ministry has been leasing a single private aircraft that it uses to move asylum-seekers between detention centers within the country, new documents obtained by BuzzFeed News reveal that France has also been leasing several planes to deport asylum-seekers over the last 11 years.

The French government has used a number of ways to deport migrants in the past, including commercial flights, trains, and boats. But the border police have also been hiring smaller chartered planes, manufactured by Beechcraft, from private companies to move small groups of migrants almost on a daily basis. According to BuzzFeed News’ findings, these planes have been running at full capacity for at least a year.

Twin Jet, which rents out its business aircrafts to the border police, touts its experience in working with private businesses in a "fast," "private," "efficient," and "flexible" way.

BuzzFeed

One early morning last month, Ahmad Sadid and four other Afghan asylum-seekers at the Vincennes detention center were woken up by 11 French border police guards.

Hours later, they were escorted to a Beechcraft plane and flown to Stockholm, where Sadid was detained and the rest were deported to Kabul.

"We didn't have water or food and we couldn't use the toilets," Sadid told BuzzFeed News. "The police officers didn't take care of us. They were joking around and taking pictures from the windows."

Sadid is currently in a detention center on the Swedish island of Gotland. As of last week, he was still waiting to know if he'll be deported to Kabul.

"[The Taliban] know who I am," Sadid said. "If I'm sent back to Afghanistan, they'll try to detain me or even kill me."

According to official documents obtained by BuzzFeed News, the French Interior Ministry has made numerous calls for bids from aircraft companies, the first of which dates back to June 2006. According to this first bid, the national police were leasing a plane for "liaison, staff transportation, and cargo missions." No other information was given about these missions. The 12-month contract was awarded to the company Twin Jet and renewed three times, at a total cost of 6,186,860 euros.

An excerpt from the first call for tenders launched for the leasing of an aircraft "with a maximum capacity of 19 seats."

The French border force has been leasing small Beechcraft airplanes — which carry up to 19 passengers — to move four or five migrants at a time. Twin Jet, a French regional airline, highlights the advantages of this kind of service on its website: "confidentiality, swiftness, efficiency."

BuzzFeed News tracked several of these flights that operated throughout the European Union from June 2016 to August 2017 using the flights' unique "call signs", which helped identify that they were transporting migrants.

This map was developed by BuzzFeed News using data from ADS-B Exchange, a database that identifies aircrafts in flight using their radio broadcasts. All flights may not be covered, and journeys are not represented in full. All flights made on the same day are represented by a continuous line in red.

Peter Aldhous/BuzzFeed News

The map above shows the destinations most frequently used by the French border force for removing migrants. Italy is the main port of entry in Europe for migrants, and is at the top of the list for French deportations. Because of the Dublin III Regulation of the EU, the first country where a request for asylum is filed is responsible for dealing with them.

According to the official gazette published by the French government, these kinds of deportations using private aircrafts aren’t new. A 2007 Le Monde article mentions the leasing of a Beechcraft plane piloted by members of the French border force. At the time, Jean-Yves Topin, the deputy director of the French national police, told Le Monde that leasing a Twin Jet Beechcraft gave officers more flexibility and independence than a regular airline.

In 2008, a new call for bids was launched. This time, the money was coming from the national police budget for immigration and asylum, rather than from the Interior Ministry. Once again, Twin Jet snatched up the deal, at 3 million euros for one year, which could be renewed for an additional 20 months.

In 2010, the Interior Ministry was looking for an airplane in order to carry out deportations and liaison missions. This time, Chalair Aviation, a company based in the city of Caen, bagged the contract for 3 million euros. An article in Le Parisien reported on the technical problems encountered by the "illegal immigrant plane" at the time. One official close to the 2010 call for bids, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity, told BuzzFeed News that the ministry had renewed its collaboration twice with the Normandy-based company.

Twin Jet won the contract for deportations in February 2015. Its planes were provided to the police for the amount of 1.5 million euros. That year, Twin Jet aircrafts were used to clear out the "Jungle" migrant and refugee camp in Calais, as reported by StreetPress in an investigation in October 2015.

Numerous other press reports showed that Beechcraft aircraft were being used outside of the official bidding period. According to Les Inrockuptibles, the French government used the aircraft in August 2010, this time to deport a Georgian family. This confirmed that these aircraft have been in use since 2006, which would bring the total cost for aircraft leases to about 34.8 million euros.

The cost for these deportations could run even higher, taking into account the cost of fuel and of wages for the police agents involved in piloting the aircraft and escorting the migrants. According to French law, every migrant must be escorted by two French border force agents, which means each aircraft is only taking at most 5 or 6 migrants at a time, because the plane can only fly 19 passengers at a time.

"I think you made a mistake with your figures, but I can't really say much more about this," Olivier Manaut, president of Twin Jet, told BuzzFeed News.

But an aviation official who worked on some of these bids for the Interior Ministry and spoke on condition of anonymity said the figures seemed to line up with contracts he was aware of. He refused to give any further details.

BuzzFeed News attempted to contact the General Directorate of Foreigners, which oversees immigration at the Interior Ministry; the communication department of the police; and the spokesperson of the Interior Ministry several times by email and telephone. None of them responded. But according to public documents, the Interior Ministry for the past year has been looking to find solutions to cut costs on renting flights.

The duo's vision is a bunch of these little customized boxes full of stuff in front of apartments and vending machines:

“Each community tends to have relatively homogenous tastes, given that they live or work in the same place,” McDonald explains. “By studying their buying behavior, we’re hoping to eventually figure out how the needs of people in one apartment building differ from those in another. We could customize the items in one dorm versus the next.”

Of course, the startup is named Bodega, named for the corner stores typically run by members of New York City's Latino and immigrant communities. McDonald was asked by Fast Company if he felt like using that as its name was insensitive:

I asked McDonald point-blank about whether he’s worried that the name Bodega might come off as culturally insensitive. Not really. “I’m not particularly concerned about it,” he says. “We did surveys in the Latin American community to understand if they felt the name was a misappropriation of that term or had negative connotations, and 97% said ‘no’. It’s a simple name and I think it works.”

The sprawling document, which is still up, opens with text reading, "someone hacked Antifa, [sic] and got the entire list of people available for antifa activities."

The text at the top of the document is basically gibberish. There is no singular "Antifa" to hack. Anti-fascist communities are usually loose networks of left-wing activists and anarchists who organize locally to disrupt far-right demonstrations.

The intro to the document, however, pushes a popular conspiracy theory on far-right messageboards that anti-fascist activists are actually well-organized agents working for a cabal of globalist elites.

Pastebin

The list is a hodgepodge of names and personal information collected over months, but the origins of the list date back to a petition set up in April by the organization Refuse Fascism.

The list is a hodgepodge of names and personal information collected over months, but the origins of the list date back to a petition set up in April by the organization Refuse Fascism.

Refusefascism.org’s petition was a list of people who signed a letter condemning the Trump administration and accusing it of spreading fascism.

“We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America! Drive Out the Trump/Pence Regime,” the petition reads. “The Trump/Pence Regime is a Fascist Regime. Not insult or exaggeration, this is what it is. For the future of humanity and the planet, we, the people, must drive this regime out.”

The petition was linked to on 4chan, with a user writing, "These fucking imbecilic ‘antifa’ have given us a wonderful gift!! They have created a list of names for /pol/ to crawl through and cross check all the hundreds of antifa sympathizers."

A day later, 4chan users began organizing a way to look up the names on refusefascism.org’s petition by turning it into a game. Instead of usernames, 4chan gives users a number generated by the order of when they post. The original poster told users that if their post ended in 00–04, they would look up last names with A, if it ended in 05–08, they would look up last names with B, and so on.

“We will respond to this attack by exposing to the world the nature and danger posed by these fascist cowards, by defeating their attempts to destroy people’s lives, and by bringing forward even more people to stand up against the fascist regime to say: NO! We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America,” Refuse Fascism told BuzzFeed News when the pastebin file started getting compiled.
